Record-keeping rules in the UAE

  • Under federal regulation, financial records and documents must be kept for at least five years; keeping them longer is advisable for evidencing tax compliance.
  • Cash receipts require a voucher; it must be issued in the business's name and show the date, the signature of the person issuing it, the recipient, the amount and the nature of the transaction.
  • Bank transactions must be supported by statements; records may be kept electronically.
  • Invoices, credit notes and contracts are retained as supporting documents.

In-house or outsourced?

Most small businesses start out doing the books themselves. The problem is that accounting is a job in itself, and the owner's time is already committed. Employing a full-time accountant, meanwhile, adds insurance, recruitment and training costs on top of a salary.

Outsourcing costs less than either, and brings one more advantage: the party keeping your records also watches the filing calendar.

Most penalties aren't about not knowing

In our experience, most penalties come not from misreading a complex rule but simply from missing a date. Whoever takes on the accounting takes on the calendar too — that's the real gain.
